FAQs
Making a gluten free peach pie recipe
Inspired by a blogger recipe challenge, I made a gluten free apple and peach pie version of Flavors by Four’s crumb apple pie.
Crust
Use a gluten free store-bought frozen pie crust for the bottom crust.
I recommend the 9” Wholly Wholesome Gluten Free Pie Shell. Find these in the freezer section of your grocery store.
Pro Tip: Don’t bake the gluten-free crust before filling, since it dries out the pie dough.
(These come in packs of two. Use the second pie crust for Quick & Easy Quiche.)
Buy a mix.
Here’s gluten free pie crust mix I like. That way you can use your own pie plate.
Or make a gluten-free pie crust from scratch.
Here’s a gluten free pie crust recipe that I like: Perfect All Butter Pie Crust. It makes a wonderful, flaky crust.
Crumble topping
Make a crumble topping instead of making a top crust. So much easier!
Use a gluten-free flour blend like Bob’s Red Mill Gluten-Free 1-to-1 Baking Flour. I love this product because it cooks up just like regular flour.
(Learn how to measure flour correctly for the best results in your everyday baking.)
Also, make sure to use gluten free old fashioned oatmeal and not regular old fashioned oatmeal because of cross-contamination issues.

What types of apples?
I recommend using Granny Smith apples.
Check out my list of best apples for baking in my Easy & Healthy Apple Pie Filling Recipe article.
Pro Tip: If you’re preparing apples ahead of time, sprinkle with some lemon juice so they don’t brown.
Can you make peach pie with frozen peaches?
If it isn’t peach season and you can’t get fresh peaches, frozen peaches are a terrific option.
Frozen juicy peaches are a wonderful time saver since they’re already peeled, chopped, and ready to go.
Make this peach pie dairy-free or vegan
Make your homemade pie crust with milk substitutes (coconut, soy or rice milk) and a vegan butter spread like Earth Balance.
The crumb topping can be made with the same vegan spread or coconut oil.

More recipe tips
● Instead of using coconut palm sugar, use light brown sugar or turbinado sugar.
● If you want to go sugar free, use you can use
- Swerve Sweetener,
- Swerve Sweetener, Brown,
- powdered monk fruit sweetener, or
- golden monk fruit sweetener.
● No rice flour? Use corn starch instead.
Baking Tip: Check the pie three-quarters of the way through the baking process. If the crust edge starts to get too brown, loosely cover the pie with foil.
How to serve the pie
Serve with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Store leftover pie covered with plastic wrap in the refrigerator.
Pro Tip: Gluten free crusts may not hold together for slicing. If your pie falls apart, just push it together a little bit.
Use whipped cream or ice cream on top of the pie to disguise the breakage. It’ll look like one of those fancy Instagram pictures.

Ingredients
- 1 gluten free pie crust (store-bought, from a mix, or using your favorite recipe)
- 4 cups cored, peeled, thinly sliced apples
- 2 cups thinly sliced peaches
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 cup coconut palm sugar
- 1 tablespoon rice flour
- 1/2 cup gluten free old fashioned oatmeal
- 1/3 cup gluten free all-purpose flour
- 3 tablespoons coconut palm sugar or sugar substitute
- 3 tablespoons buttery spread, melted
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375 F. Take your premade pie crust and set it aside.
- Wash, peel, core, and slice your apples. Wash, pit, and thinly slice peaches. Set aside in a large bowl.
- In a small mixing bowl add the 1/4 cup of coconut palm sugar, cinnamon, and rice starch. Mix well. Add the sugar mixture to the bowl with the apples and peaches. Toss to coat the fruit and set aside for now.
- To make the crumble, combine the flour, oatmeal, and remaining coconut palm sugar in a bowl. Then melt the buttery spread on low power in your microwave for 15 seconds at a time until totally melted. Pour the melted spread into the bowl of dry ingredients and mix until combined.
- Put the fruit in the pie crust and spread evenly. Then top the fruit with the crumb mixture making sure to spread it out over the entire pie.
- Bake the pie until the apples and peaches are tender and the crumb topping is golden brown, about 30-40 minutes. Depending on your oven, you may want to bake for 30 minutes, then loosely cover the pie with foil so the crust and topping don't get too brown. Then cook the pie for 10 minutes longer. If you feel the pie isn't quite done, then lower the heat to 350 degrees and bake for 10 more minutes.
